“Fashion is what you’re offered four times a year by designers. And style is what you choose.” – Lauren Hutton
The city of light, with its iconic art and architecture, cafe culture and air of romance, has inspired poets and artists for centuries. Paris is, indeed, a beautiful city. And one of the four fashion capitals of the world, alongside with London, Milan and New York.
Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent. Can we imagine fashion today without these personalities?
Dior has revolutionized not only fashion design, but also fashion management. She was the first one to use the license system. It happen when Dior realized that the Americans, after coming to Paris and seeing her dress patterns, were going home and copy her work.
Many companies were operating on this licensing system. Furthermore, many of them continue to do the same today, especially on remote continents.
Another relevant step was when French designers understood that the haute-couture industry and, later, the prêt-a porter needs an institution to fight for the rights of those who compose it. In 1868 was founded the “Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture”.
Today, only fashion houses that have obtained the haute-couture appellation can join it. This legally protected appellation is granted to a fashion house through a ministerial decision.
All of these facts, as well as the creative effervescence and the passion of the French for fine art, make Paris – The Great Capital of Fashion. To this we add the help that the French Government gives to young people. Students that decide to create their own brand, instead of working for giants like Dior or Louis Vuitton. Through various programs of information and support, these fresh brands slowly manage to get their way and join the world of creative French clothing.
Paris is, indeed, The Great Capital of Fashion of the World.
