Alberta Ferretti grew up in Cattolica, Italy (Emilia Romagna), in the 1950s and ’60s. The eye for design stands in her family because her mother owned a dressmaking atelier in the same town, and Ferretti was cutting fabric for it by the time she was 12. After 3 years, she left school, got married and had decided to start her own business.

The soon-to-be one of the best designers in the world, Alberta Ferretti built a thriving fashion empire from a small boutique she opened in a seaside Italian village in the late 1960s.

Alberta Ferretti is best known for her translucent and glossy dresses. Ferretti also heads a manufacturing company that makes and distributes the lines of some of the most famous designers like Narciso Rodrigues and Jean Paul Gaultier. Her personal belief comes from the Italian sentence “la dolce vita” a.k.a. “the good life“.

1968

She took a small loan from her parents and she opened her own clothing store in Cattolica, calling it “Jolly.” It had a workshop upstairs as well as living quarters. Few years later, she had two little boys and a thriving business to look after.

1970

“Jolly” caught the attention in the fashion industry and began to sell the work of some Italian designers like Gianni Versace, Mariuccia Mandelli and Giorgio Armani. Soon after, she started to grow up the business with her own design ideas.

1973

1981

She began to show seasonal collections on runways of Milan. Her designs were both feminine and modern, made from delicate fabrics like chiffon, gazar and georgette. The idea caught on women around the world.

1989

She launched Ferretti Jeans Philosophy and renamed it in 1994 as Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti. She also began opening boutiques (both Alberta Ferretti and Philosophy brands) in the key cities (Milan, London, Tokyo, New York). Ferretti was named the first female founding member of an Italian bank named Cassa di Risparmio di Rimini which was yet another brick in the foundation. And that’s not all. She was also named the best female entrepreneur in Emilia Romagna.
