The full Biography of ALEXANDER WANG who defined THE M.O.D. - Fashion Worldwide

A Taiwanese-American fashion designer born May 17, 1984 in San Francisco, California, Alexander Wang was soon to be one of the most famous and young designers around the world. What got him this far was his confidence, style and design abilities.

Currently, Alexander Wang is creative director of the eponymous label he launched in 2005, at the young age of 21.

After summer courses taken at Central Saint Martins School (London), Alexander Wang presented his very first designs at his brother’s wedding in 1999 when he was only 15 years old.

2002, The studies

He enrolled at Parsons School of Design in New York City and at the same time, worked for Marc Jacobs, Derek Lam, Teen Vogue and Vogue US. Here, he met some of the fashion world’s most influential personalities.

2004, The beginning

After 2 years in the program, the designer decided to abandon his studies at Parsons School of Design, to start his own label, initially creating a knitwear collection based on six unisex silhouettes. First sold door-to-door, the sweaters were a huge success after they gained publicity from a New York Times article the following year.

Wang was supported in his venture by his family: his brother is chief financial advisor, his sister-in-law acts as chief principal officer.

2005, The fashion label

He launched a fashion label, predominantly with a collection of knitwear. Then for the first time, Wang presented his women’s prêt-a-porter collection on a runway in New York.

2007, The debut

Wang debuted his first runway collection for Autumn Winter 2007 at New York Fashion Week. Knit cardigans, loose oversized jersey t-shirts, vintage-style empire waist dresses and leather blazers were a huge hit on the runway.

The Alexander Wang look defined itself in three letters: M.O.D. – an acronym for Model Off Duty that describes the idea of urban style and sportswear + a mix between chic, cool, rock and grunge.

2008, The awards

Wang received the top award from the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund, a sum of $200,000.

“I’m not like most designers, who have to set sail on an exotic getaway to get inspired. Most of the time, it’s on my walk to work, or sitting in the subway and seeing something random or out of context.”

2009, The winner

He was announced as the winner of the Swarovski Womenswear Designer of the Year, and as the winner of the Swiss Textiles Award.

2011, GQ Magazine

Wang’s entry into menswear was noted by GQ Magazine, who named him Best Menswear Designer. That same year, he won the CFDA Award for Best Accessory Designer, and he soon launched his flagship boutique in SoHo.

2012, Balenciaga

Alexander Wang was the official creative director for Balenciaga. He showed his first collection in February, at Paris Fashion Week Fall Winter 2013-2014.

“I always wanted to create a collection inspired by sports. I never played sports, maybe that’s why it intrigues me”

Alexander Wang now produces both men’s and women’s collections, diffusion line T by Alexander Wang for men and women, footwear, and accessories. He is one of fashion’s greatest sensations so far this century. His work has been appreciated by  fashion-oriented young adults a lot.
