The new Rolex Cosmograph Daytona belongs to Oyster Perpetual series and it was released in March 2017 at Baselword. This is a very famous international exhibition of watches and jewelries in Basel. Of course, we are talking about a high-end location for the main producers in these fields. Thus, they come here every year to release their latest products.
Actually, the Oyster Perpetual series dates back from 1926. Over the years, it satisfied its customers with water resistant and dustproof watches. In order to achieve that, they used the famous technique of perfect case sealing. Also, the series include many sport watches that are well-known for their resistance as well as for their specific functions. For instance, in this direction we can name Rolex Submariner, Rolex Yachtmaster, Rolex Daytona, Rolex Sea-Dweller and Oyster Perpetual Datejust.
If we refer to Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, we should say it is 70 years old. It all started in 1962 when Rolex was signing a partnership with Daytona International Speedway, the organizer of the most important car races in the United States. Thus, the following year, Rolex was launching a special model for both the pilots and the fans of this speedway. This was Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph, a chronograph watch which later on became Rolex Daytona.
However, the one who definitively marked the history of Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, was Paul Newman. Once he played in Winning (1969) as a racing pilot wearing a Rolex Daytona, this model became extremely popular. Later on, the actor fell in love himself with speed. Thus, at his first race, he also wore this watch increasing its popularity.
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona – THE Watch!
As far as the 2017 model is concerned, it comes in 3 versions: yellow, white or Everose gold. These versions use the innovative Oysterflex bracelet in elastomer. A metal blade would reinforce it and it also features a monobloc Cerachrom bezel, patented by Rolex, in black ceramic. It is all about evolving while keeping a balance between high technology and sleek aesthetics. Thus, Rolex Cosmograph Daytona pays tribute to the heritage of this legendary chronograph. The black bezel is reminiscent of the 1965 model that was fitted with a black Plexiglas bezel insert.
As it is the case with all Rolex watches, the new model has the Superlative Chronometer certification that Rolex redefined in 2015. This is how this watch ensures singular performance on the wrist, in terms of reliability. Customers agree that this is a watch born to race. Therefore, it soon became one of the best known chronographs in the world.
You will definitely recognize it by the bezel engraved with a tachymetric scale. It features the deposition of a thin layer of 18 ct gold or platinum in the numerals and graduations via a PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) process. Thus, it makes it ideal for measuring average speeds of up to 400 units of distance – miles or kilometres – per hour. On the other hand, the monobloc Cerachrom bezel in high-tech ceramic provides certain advantages. It appears a single piece and holds the crystal firmly in place on the middle case, ensuring waterproofness. Hence, it is corrosion resistant, virtually scratchproof and the UV rays would not affect its color.
The case is waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet). For this reason, it became a paragon of robustness, proportion and elegance. Its characteristically shaped middle case is crafted from a solid block of 18 ct gold. Its fluted case back is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement.
