Influenced by the music and street art, the urban fashion style addopts different clothing items but combined in a unique way. Teenagers approach the urban style through indie, gangsta, hip-hop, rap or grunge lines.
The urban style was born on the streets, in the neighborhood and was against all rules. The trendsetters were opposite to all the designers and made it against all odds. It soon became the “it” fashion style, because it’s a free way to express your personality in the most unique kind of way. If we talk about “urban” we talk about being bold, free, having courage to combine unusual items that seem to work together.
Born in the ’80s and still in style during the ’90s, the “street style” fashion first appeared in Seattle and became mainstream, due to Nirvana – Kurt Cobain and other rock-stars of the moment.
This look is relaxed, casual and it first had jaded jeans, a T-shirt, hoodie, a sporty hat and a pair of Vansi. It became extremely popular when the famous fashion designer Marc Jacobs presented it in the fashion world as “the grunge fashion line”.
The urban looks was born on the streets, worn by common people and soon became interesting even for designers that reinterpreted it and amplified it even more among the stars and the other trendsetters.
Men and women introduced this fashion style into their daily looks and made it original and uncensored.
Scott Schuman, the creator of the famous website “thesartorialist.com”, was the first to define the urban style. Despite of the opportunities at Valentino, Helmut Lang or Jean Paul Gaultier, he chose to present the street style fashion on the streets of New York. If you look at the photos from the latest seasons, you cannot notice the T-shirts and shirts, sneakers and ripped jeans, the parka, the denim jackets on people at the subway, on bike, grabbing a coffee or eating a sandwich in the park.
Representative Pieces: the slim fit jeans, loafers, the denim shirt, the hoodie, the denim jacket, sunglasses, the parka, the backpack, the canvas belts, the simple T-shirts (with or without collar), sneakers or trainers (from the classic Converse, Adidas and New Balance to the high-street brands), the canvas boots, espadriles and boat shoes.
